In order to be a mediator in New York one does not need to be an attorney or even have any training. Anyone can basically hang out a shingle that says, ” Joe Blow, Mediator.” It is important when you work with a mediator that you find out that person’s training and skills. While an attorney mediator cannot represent you, certainly she would have the requisite legal knowledge to assist you through the process. Therefore, if you have decided to work with an attorney mediator, you should make sure that person is licensed in New York State, as the laws of another state will not be applicable to you.
